FUN FACT: Did you know that Connecticut is commonly called the "nutmeg state"? This is because of its history of trading onions, corn, and tobacco leaves with the Caribbean, where captains would bring back spices. The whole nutmeg was a prized spice easily made from hardwood and seasoned in barrels with actual nutmeg. As a result, people used to grate nutmeg-flavored hardwood onto their dishes for many years.

Is Italian seasoning used much in Italy?

No, the concept of 'Italian seasoning’ isn't popular in Italy. However, I believe it is a commercial definition in the United States and elsewhere of a blend of herbs used in Italy to season food.

Italians generally use specific herbs for specific dishes. Sometimes they combine several herbs, but then, in this case, they still have particular blends: for roasted meat, fish, etc. (pre-packed versions of them are available), not a generic all-purpose blend.
