Good Start Eating Tweaks

Food is essential to our lives, just like air!

"I enjoy cooking and imagining the taste of food before I cook it. I tend to cook more than I need. The pandemic has led me to gain weight by indulging in second and third servings."

I am an internationally trained chef with many positive media reviews. I enjoy creating menus and managing costs. I have also mentored food entrepreneurs as a resource for the Small Business Administration (SBA).
I started improving my eating habits by controlling the size of my portions. To make it easier, I replaced my oversized bowls, plates, and glasses with ones that hold a regular portion. Large dinner plates can cause us to overeat by distorting our perception of portion sizes.

"After weighing my food portions for a week or two, I gained insight into the appropriate size of food for my plate. As a result, I can now estimate, at a glance, how much more I am eating and how much is enough food."

"I am amazed at how quickly my stomach adjusted to consistent portion size, allowing me to recognize when I'm full. Additionally, I consciously try to eat more slowly by pausing after each bite and savoring the taste. While this approach doesn't always work, I believe it's worth trying."

I now use my regular dishes and bowls, which some people say are European-sized, to determine the portion size of my food quickly. After weighing my food for a few weeks, I better understand how much I eat, regardless of where I am or the situation. For instance, I know that an 8-ounce bowl of soup is a portion, and I can easily keep track of my refills.
One of my steps was to reduce my intake of certain products, such as sugar. For example, I now use two teaspoons of sugar in my coffee instead of three. Similarly, when it comes to bread, I eat only one-third or half of what I used to eat. This allows me to consume fewer calories without feeling missing out on anything.

It's not recommended to temporarily eliminate certain foods from your diet, as it can lead to increased cravings. Moreover, later consuming the "forbidden" food may make you feel guilty and weak-willed, which is not ideal. I include ribs, fresh sausages, bacon, chopped burgers, good-quality pasta, and rice to ensure I get nutrients. You can modify any recipe to reduce calories while maintaining taste and texture.

When creating the RockyStepsWay meal plan, I chose fresh recipes from weekly grocery store fliers. I also enjoyed serving wine, beer, and a scoop of homemade ice cream almost daily. However, I always remained mindful of my meals' ingredients, freshness, and portion size. As a result, I steadily lost weight, going from a pants waist size of 48 to 40 in about a year. My current goal is to reach and maintain a size 38 pants.

If you want to improve your health, it's essential to keep an eye on your portion sizes and be mindful of what you eat. Although adjusting to this new habit may take some time, the benefits will be worth it in the long run.

The food industry often uses chemicals and colorings in their products to achieve flavors and textures at a low cost to them and a high cost to consumers.

Food is the fuel that powers our bodies.
It's essential to pay attention to the nutritional content of our food. If you're eating foods with unfamiliar ingredients, your body might not use them effectively. In the same way that using the wrong fluids in your car can cause it to break down, consuming the wrong food can negatively impact your body's ability to function correctly.
